Lloyd A. King, Jr. was born in the rural town of Batavia in western New York State.  Lloyd graduated high school in Sweetwater, Texas and attended college at Philadelphia College of Art in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania majoring in Industrial Design with a minor in Fine Arts.

Lloyd’s many aspirations were put on hold in 1967 during the Vietnam War when he was drafted into the U.S. Army.  Lloyd served as a non-commissioned officer in the infantry with the 101st Airborne Division-Airmobile during 1968 and 1969, the worst years of the war.

Following Vietnam, Lloyd worked in the Oil and Gas Industry for twenty-eight years retiring as a Director of Safety and Training.  In conjunction with his notable career, he lived in nine states and traveled to numerous foreign countries.  He and his wife live in Lafayette, Louisiana, which he refers to as his adoptive Cajun hometown.

Lloyd began delving into the world of creative writing as a  combat infantry soldier in 1968.  He penned his emotions, experiences, and the sights and sounds of war in the form of poetic vignettes while in the jungles of South Vietnam.  He described the things he couldn’t tell his family back home.

Thirty years after surviving Vietnam, Lloyd decided to tell his family about his experiences, but he couldn’t verbalize events that still haunt him today like the rage of a fierce thunderstorm.  On July 28, 1998, he began a literary mission to tell others what the war was like…hoping that his family and friends would understand the war and better understand Lloyd as well.

Lloyd considers himself very blessed to be alive.  Wounded twice, he experienced many of life’s terrible adversities firsthand…and somehow survived.  Through seeing death, fear, killing, and atrocity, he learned about his own mental and physical capabilities and limitations.

Lloyd is a highly decorated soldier having received the Silver Star … our nation’s fourth highest medal, the Soldier’s Medal, the Bronze Star, two Purple Hearts, two Air Medals, and nearly a dozen other medals and ribbons including the highest individual medal awarded by the Republic of South Vietnam, the RVN Gallantry Cross with Gold Star.

Lloyd’s first book, entitled “From ‘Nam With Love”, is a compilation of profound words complimented by powerful artwork that together tell a unique story of human conflict that only a person who has experienced war could possibly describe.  “From ‘Nam With Lovewas awarded the Military Writers Society of America’s prestigious 2006 Gold Medal Award for Best Book of Poetry.

Lloyd’s second book, available in 2008, describes his day-to-day life and his experiences with his squad and the other soldiers he served with.  Lloyd reveals a different and sensitive perspective of his struggle as a person and as a soldier during his combat tour in the jungles and mountains of South Vietnam.

Lloyd was honored in November 1991 by being selected to represent the Vietnam War Era veterans during an interview for a locally televised program in Lafayette, Louisiana called Faces of Acadiana.  This inaugural tribute was sponsored by KLFY-TV to honor veterans of all wars and was aired during the nightly news in conjunction with Veteran’s Day and the City of Lafayette, Tribute to Veteran’s Parade.

Lloyd has been a guest speaker at elementary, junior, and senior high schools, and at Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day ceremonies in Lafayette, Louisiana.  He often shares his poetry and sometimes talks about the Vietnam War.  One of Lloyd’s poems, “A Veteran’s Plea” that is not found in “From ‘Nam With Love”, was published in conjunction with Veteran’s Day in the November 2001 issues of The Times of Acadiana in Lafayette, Louisiana and in The Brunswick News newspaper in Brunswick, Georgia.

Most recently, Lloyd’s article entitled “Combat Introspection” was featured in the December 2005, Yarnspinners and Wordweavers Newsletter found on the Internet at: http://www.redenginepress.com/Newsletter12dialup.pdf.  Lloyd is currently working on a third book about Vietnam and continues to write poetry and create artwork depicting the Vietnam Era.  Prints of Lloyd’s artwork are available on the website

Snippets of what People Are Saying about From 'Nam With Love:

"Lloyd King bravely exposes a soldier's soul.  Told with ineffable sorrow, From Nam With Love rips ideology and politics from our hearts.  At the core, we are all human -- and we grieve for those who must kill and those who must die." ~ Joyce Faulkner, Author of In the Shadow of Suribachi

"From 'Nam With Love is a captivating and insightful read.  This old warrior's poetic vignettes will rekindle similar emotions in many who experienced war at such a young age."  ~ John Sherman Crow, Brigadier General, USA, (Retired)

"From 'Nam With Love is a remarkable collection of poetic stories of a soldier who lived the battle and emerged as a man of honor and grace."  ~ LTC (Retired) C. J. Radu, US Army, 1st Cavalry 1965-66, 212th Combat Aviation Bn 1969-70 Vietnam

"From 'Nam With Love is a must read for any soldier who has ever carried a weapon into battle to protect the values that we in America hold so dear.  It is a wonderful tool for insight into the heart of any combat soldier."~ Karen McCook Fontenot - Vietnam Veteran - USAF Medical Corp 1973-77, 81st Medical Group - Keesler AFB, Mississippi - United States Air Force Hospital – Clark AFB, the Philippines - HQ 3 COMBAT SUPPORT GROUP (PACAF)

"War always changes a person. Although people respond in different ways it affects them forever.  Lloyd has chosen the medium of poetry to express his personal experiences.  Through his poetry one can see the transformation of a young inexperienced soldier seeing combat for the first time to an older more mature individual who many years later remembers certain details as if they happened only yesterday."~ Eddie R Beesley, Cpl USMC retired, Vietnam veteran, author of Lucky Enough

"From 'Nam With Love is so vivid and wonderfully written that it touched a nerve.  Each poem reflects the camouflaged language spoken by the many soldiers who fought, lived, and died.  Lloyd’s book was a psychological trip that brought out a full gamut of emotions, as I relived my two tours in Vietnam." ~Marco A. Principio, Major, Infantry, USA, (Retired)

"For those who have called each war since Vietnam 'the new Vietnam,' there was only one Vietnam.  Often-decorated Lloyd A. King portrays that conflict in a way that Nam vets will recognize and today's soldiers will understand." ~ Kristin Johnson, www.poemsforyou.com, www.poetwarriorproject.com

"From ‘Nam With Love is an enthralling diary of a combat soldier’s travails and experiences in jungle warfare.  Lloyd King’s soliloquy and illustrations present an inspirational ana – and a rewarding read.  His lyrical style and personal approach creates a semblance of reality, giving the reader a posture of actually ‘being there’.~ Judge Kaliste J. Saloom, Jr. (retired), WWII, Special Agent, US Army Counter-Intelligence Corps, Europe and North Africa 1942-1945

"Lloyd's book was written with courage and represents the blood of many, and is delivered by one voice that refused to be silent any longer. "~ Georgia Richardson, Queen Jaw Jaw, Humor Columnist for The National Association of Baby Boomer Women (NABBW) and Author of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Throne and Pink Jasper.

"Lloyd's poems have a way of dissolving thirty-eight years, putting the reader at the scene of the action." ~ Lyle R. Metzler, CH (COL), USA (Retired)

"In From ‘Nam With Love, decorated Army war hero, Lloyd A. King, offers a superbly intimate view of what it was like to be on the ground in Vietnam in 1968.  Through his poetry and ink drawings, he tells us the story that many are afraid to even whisper about.  He tells us about fear, frustration, death, hunger, horror, fatigue, honor, courage, nobility, and yet even takes the time to mention a single flower that gave him a brief moment of respite in the middle of hell itself.   ~ Anastasia Clark, author, poet, military veteran, SGT, USMC, 1981-89

"Lloyd's poetry paints an exquisite picture of the effects of war on the human psyche.  We glimpse the innocence lost and the pain found by so many of our soldiers in Vietnam, and we realize that he is a voice for all who have served." ~ Pat McGrath Avery, author of They Came Home: Korean War POWs Tell Their Stories.
